Grand Lake sits at the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, with the Arapaho National Recreation Area stretching south along a chain of interconnected lakes — Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Lake Granby. The result is one of the most varied campground corridors in Colorado, with options ranging from a primitive NPS campground inside the park to full-hookup RV sites on the shore of Lake Granby. Whether you’re backpacking into the park’s west side or pulling a boat trailer, there’s a site near Grand Lake that fits.

Campgrounds Inside Rocky Mountain National Park

Timber Creek Campground

Timber Creek is the only drive-in campground on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, and it’s the closest campground to the Grand Lake entrance. It sits at 8,900 feet along the Colorado River — which at this elevation is little more than a wide mountain creek — surrounded by stands of lodgepole pine and open meadows where elk are commonly spotted in the mornings.

What to know: 98 sites, suitable for tents and RVs up to 30 feet. No hookups. Flush toilets and potable water on-site. Amphitheater with ranger programs in summer. Reservations strongly recommended in July and August — the campground fills days in advance during peak season.

Why stay here: Immediate trailhead access to the North Inlet and Colorado River Trail systems. The closest you can sleep to the park’s west-side backcountry without a backcountry permit.

Campgrounds in the Arapaho National Recreation Area

The Arapaho National Recreation Area (ANRA) manages the shoreline of Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby south of Grand Lake town. Campgrounds here are operated by the US Forest Service and reservable through recreation.gov.

Green Ridge Campground

Green Ridge sits on the east shore of Shadow Mountain Lake, about two miles south of Grand Lake. It’s a mid-sized campground with a mix of tent sites and sites suitable for larger RVs, and the lake access makes it the best choice for anyone bringing a kayak, canoe, or small motorboat.

What to know: 78 sites across two loops. Electric hookups available on select sites. Flush toilets, potable water, boat ramp access nearby. The Shadow Mountain Lake fishing is productive for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon throughout summer.

Why stay here: Best campground in the area for water-based recreation. Shadow Mountain Lake is quieter and less crowded than Lake Granby to the south, and the views of the Never Summer Range from the shoreline are strong.

Stillwater Campground

Stillwater is the largest campground in the Arapaho NRA, sitting on the north shore of Lake Granby about eight miles south of Grand Lake. It’s a full-service campground with hookups, a dump station, and a boat ramp — the right choice for RV travelers or anyone planning to spend time on the water.

What to know: 129 sites including full-hookup, electric-only, and primitive tent sites. Flush toilets, showers, dump station. Lake Granby is one of the best kokanee salmon fisheries in Colorado — the campground hosts serious anglers through September.

Why stay here: The largest and best-equipped campground in the Grand Lake corridor. If you’re bringing a large RV or want full amenities, this is the site. Lake Granby is also the most open water in the chain — better for powerboating and sailing than the smaller Shadow Mountain Lake.

Private Campgrounds Near Grand Lake

Elk Creek Campground

Elk Creek is a private campground and RV park located within Grand Lake town, making it the most convenient option for anyone who wants to walk to the boardwalk, restaurants, and outfitters in the evening. It sits along Tonahutu Creek with mountain views and accepts tents, RVs, and fifth wheels.

What to know: Full hookup and partial hookup sites, tent sites, and basic cabins. Hot showers, laundry, camp store on-site. Pet friendly. Walking distance to the Grand Lake boardwalk — the only campground in the corridor where you can walk into town for dinner.

Why stay here: Convenience. If a central location matters more than wilderness solitude, Elk Creek is the practical choice. Good fallback when Timber Creek and Green Ridge are full.
