As the warmer season in Colorado is approaching and our camping trips draw near, it’s time to examine our camper or RV and make sure we’re prepared. I often hear people talk about winterizing the camper, but it’s less common to hear the opposite. The reason this came to my attention is because it’s common to hear about campers heading out for the first time and to be surprised by features that aren’t working. Here’s a quick guide on opening up the RV for the season!
- Start out with an exterior inspection. Check the condition of the roof and sides to make sure seals are in good shape and there’s no obvious damage from the winter storms. Check the lights and replace bulbs. Verify that the tires are properly inflated and in good condition for those longer hauls.
- Check fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant as well as any other fluids according to your RV.
- Test the battery
- Check the propane system and make sure there are no leaks or damage. You’ll likely need to fill up on propane before you go anyway.
- Test the appliances – stove, refrigerator, air conditioning, lights, slideouts and canopy when applicable
- Test the plumbing – partially fill the water tank and run some water through the taps and flush out any anti-freeze in the drains. It’s also recommended clean the water system with a light solution to ensure there’s no odor.
- Safety equipment – Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguisher and any other mechanism to avoid surprises.
It’s helpful to do this as far in advance of your first camping trip as possible so you can complete the repairs if any are required. Happy Camping!
